Google is in the process of enhancing multitasking capabilities for Android phones by developing a “tiny taskbar.” This feature aims to adapt the existing taskbar from Android tablets, which significantly simplifies app switching, to better suit smaller screens.
Recent updates indicate ongoing development, including the resolution of a visual bug and the addition of a new recent apps carousel. However, the feature is not ready for an official release yet, with some layout issues still lingering.
Multitasking can often be a challenge on Android phones due to limited screen space. While features like split-screen mode and bubbles provide some assistance, the tablet taskbar is proven to offer a better user experience for app management.
Google has been exploring the possibility of bringing this functionality to smartphones, and a recent discovery suggests progress is being made. Initially introduced in Android 12L for larger displays, the tablet taskbar provides easy access to apps and can be configured to show either persistently or temporarily.
The ongoing effort to create a phone version, known internally as the “tiny taskbar,” aims to replicate this experience in a scaled-down format. Despite not being included in the upcoming Android 16 update, the feature remains under active development, with Google addressing a significant visual bug and introducing a carousel that showcases the six most recently used apps.
This recent apps carousel is a notable addition exclusive to the phone taskbar, reflecting Google’s understanding of the screen size limitations on smartphones. Unfortunately, the current implementation still faces challenges, such as not fully functioning and layout issues that arise with specific home screen grid sizes.
If Google resolves these challenges, the tiny taskbar could significantly enhance the multitasking experience for Android users. As Google continues to improve features like bubbles and split-screen mode, the overall multitasking capabilities on Android phones are expected to evolve, potentially changing how users manage multiple tasks.
