Apple is set to introduce its first foldable iPhone next year, and rumors suggest that it will incorporate an intriguing camera feature reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the upcoming foldable iPhone will have an under-display selfie camera situated beneath the folding screen. Additionally, the device’s cover display will house a camera in a cutout.
This maneuver appears to be a direct imitation of Samsung’s approach, as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the first foldable phone to implement an under-display selfie camera back in 2021. The latest model, the Galaxy Z Fold 6, maintains this feature as well. Under-display cameras conceal themselves beneath the screen, which contributes to a seamless viewing experience.
However, they do come with a caveat: their image quality is generally inferior to that of traditional selfie cameras. The underlying issue is that the display obstructs light from reaching the camera sensor, leading to subpar photo quality. In our assessment, the under-display camera on the Z Fold 6 is best reserved for video calls, with the cover camera providing better results.
Digital Chat Station also provided insights into the specifications of the foldable iPhone, indicating that it will feature a 7.76-inch folding screen and a 5.49-inch cover display. The folding screen is expected to have a resolution of 2,713 x 1,920 pixels, while the cover display will boast a resolution of 2,088 x 1,422 pixels. Notably, Apple’s design seems to adopt a squat form factor, much like the original Pixel Fold and OPPO Find N2, diverging from Samsung’s taller, narrower design.
