Samsung is set to launch its much-anticipated Ballie robot in the US this summer, equipped with the advanced AI platform, Gemini. Ballie, resembling a modern bowling ball, has been built to become a rolling smart home companion capable of understanding voice commands, visual cues, and sensor data, ensuring more natural interactions with users.
Initially unveiled in 2020, Ballie showcased various functions, including the ability to follow users around the home, manage smart devices, and monitor pets. After a period of development, it made a comeback at CES 2024 with an enhanced design and a built-in projector.
This feature allows Ballie to display videos, calls, and calendar notifications on adjacent surfaces, making it a more interactive presence in the home. The integration of Gemini, Google’s multimodal generative AI, significantly enhances Ballie’s capabilities.
This technology enables the robot to process audio and visual signals along with environmental information, allowing it to provide tailored responses. For instance, if a user expresses fatigue, Ballie could offer suggestions to help boost energy.
With Gemini, Ballie can engage in more dynamic conversations and anticipate user needs rather than merely responding to commands. Samsung aims for Ballie to evolve into a personalized assistant that can learn individual habits and preferences, moving beyond basic automation to a more sophisticated home companion.
While pricing details have not yet been announced, Samsung confirmed that Ballie will be available in the US and Korea this summer. Many consider it a significant step towards having a sci-fi-like assistant in our everyday lives.
