The OnePlus 13T is set to make a significant design change by replacing the iconic Alert Slider with a new customizable shortcut key. This decision marks a shift in OnePlus’ approach to user interface design, aligning with the modern trend of enhancing customization options for users. The announcement was made by OnePlus China president Li Jie Louis, revealing that the new physical button will not only switch between silent, vibration, and ringing modes but will also allow for a variety of custom functions. In addition to its sound mode capabilities, the shortcut key is poised to introduce a “very interesting” feature, which will be disclosed closer to the phone’s launch.
The change comes in response to market trends, as previous leaks suggested that both OnePlus and its sister brand OPPO were looking to replace the beloved Alert Slider with a more versatile control system. The Alert Slider has been a long-standing hallmark of OnePlus devices, granting users a quick and intuitive way to manage sound profiles, and its removal might disappoint some fans. The switch has been consistently compared to Apple’s mute toggle, standing out in the Android market and even prompting OPPO to include similar features in their premium models. While the removal of the Alert Slider could evoke mixed feelings among users, OnePlus appears to be framing this shift as an opportunity for further innovation.
Given the increasing incorporation of AI features in smartphones, there’s a possibility that the shortcut key could enhance user experience in new and exciting ways. As the launch date approaches, more information about the shortcut key and its capabilities is anticipated, and it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue in future OnePlus flagship devices.
