Recent reports indicate that the iPhone 17 series may not include a desirable feature present in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and S25 Ultra models. Specifically, Apple has reportedly scrapped plans for a scratch-resistant anti-reflective display coating intended for the iPhone 17 Pro series. This decision stems from challenges encountered while attempting to scale the production process for this screen coating.
According to MacRumors, this information comes from a reliable source who disclosed that production hurdles led to the cancellation of the coating. This development follows previous rumors suggesting that the iPhone 17 series would feature this advanced anti-reflective technology. In contrast, Samsung, having successfully integrated Corning’s Gorilla Armor protection in its last two Ultra models, benefits from a coating that significantly reduces glare.
In fact, the Galaxy S24 Ultra employs a protective glass solution that claims to cut glare by up to 75% compared to standard glass. The recently released Galaxy S25 Ultra has maintained this anti-reflective coating, highlighting Samsung’s commitment to enhancing display quality. However, despite these advancements, some owners of the Galaxy S24 Ultra have reported issues with the phone’s oleophobic display coating wearing off in less than a year.
A survey by Android Authority found that over 30% of respondents experienced notable wear on their S24 Ultra’s screen coating, raising concerns regarding durability. In the broader Android market, Samsung is not alone. Other brands like Iqoo and TCL have also introduced anti-glare technologies in their devices, albeit with some trade-offs in brightness.
For iPhone enthusiasts hoping for a glare-free display, it appears they may have to wait until the iPhone 18 series in 2026, while Apple is also planning to enter the foldable market next year.
