Google Wallet is on the verge of introducing a new, simplified method for adding credit and debit cards, making the process more convenient and contactless. Recent findings from an APK teardown of the latest Google Play Services beta reveal that Google is working on an NFC-based card enrollment feature.
This addition would allow users to tap their NFC-enabled cards against their smartphones to quickly add them to Google Wallet, alongside the existing options for scanning cards or entering details manually. Currently, adding cards to Google Wallet requires users to either scan them with their camera or enter the required information manually.
With the anticipated NFC feature, users can look forward to a more seamless experience on the “Add payment method” screen. When implemented, the NFC option will be presented alongside traditional methods, simplifying the overall process.
The NFC feature is expected to enable users’ smartphones to read essential card information such as the card number and expiration date. Users may still need to input the CVV code for security purposes.
Following the initial NFC scan, additional verification may be necessary depending on the card issuer’s requirements. While this innovation may be new to many users, similar NFC card scanning functions are already available in other apps.
However, it’s essential to note that not all cards may be compatible with this feature. The functionality could primarily support EMV-compliant cards, which contain data on integrated circuit chips and facilitate both inserted and contactless transactions.
For now, compatibility details remain unclear, and the exact timeline for the official rollout of NFC card enrollment in Google Wallet is not yet known. Nevertheless, its appearance in the latest beta suggests that a broader launch could be on the horizon.
