Google is working on a new feature that could alleviate the stress of dealing with broken phones by enabling backup and restoration of SIM data through Google One. This capability likely pertains to eSIMs, which have become increasingly popular in modern Android devices. The convenience of eSIMs over physical SIMs is significant; however, transferring eSIM data when switching devices or recovering from a broken phone is challenging without assistance from the carrier. Currently, many flagship Android phones support eSIM technology, yet if a user’s phone breaks, regaining network access can be problematic since there is no straightforward way to transfer an existing eSIM from one device to another.
Fortunately, new insights reveal that Google is integrating SIM data backup into the Google One device backup system. An APK teardown of the Google Play Services beta indicated features that suggest users will soon be able to back up and restore their SIM data. This is particularly beneficial for eSIMs, as they require users to manually set optimal settings, unlike physical SIMs, which remain unaffected by data wipes. Moreover, Google has redesigned the Device Backup screen to include mentions of SIM cards, which were absent in the previous layout.
Although the feature may only be limited in certain contexts, such as during factory resets where users can opt not to erase eSIM data, having a backup option could streamline the process of switching devices when neither the old nor new device is available. While it remains uncertain when this feature will be released, its potential utility makes it a highly anticipated addition for Android users.
