Google Messages Simplifies Unsubscribing from Automated Texts, According to Android Authority

Google Messages is introducing a new feature designed to simplify the process of unsubscribing from automated text messages. This update includes an “unsubscribe to stop receiving messages” prompt that appears at the bottom of the screen. By tapping “unsubscribe,” users can access a dialog that asks for the reason behind their decision, and it notifies them that a “STOP” message will be sent from their number upon unsubscribing.

Every day, organizations ranging from businesses to political campaigns send countless automated text messages for promotional or informational purposes. Unfortunately, many users who receive these messages may not realize they can opt out simply by replying with ‘STOP,’ especially if this information isn’t clearly stated in the text. The new feature in Google Messages aims to make this process more visible for users.

In a recent experience with the Google Messages app, I noticed a notification asking if I wanted to unsubscribe. When I selected “Unsubscribe,” I was presented with several reasons for doing so, including options like “Not signed up” and “Spam.” Choosing the “Spam” option even opened a tick box to report the sender, while “Other” allowed me to provide additional details. After successfully sending the “STOP” command, I received a confirmation message stating, “Unsubscribe request sent.”

A “START” button subsequently appeared, allowing me to resubscribe if I changed my mind. Currently, this Unsubscribe feature is visible in automated messages from short codes, which are typically used for high-volume business communications. Although Google has confirmed planned integration with RCS Business Messages, this functionality has not yet been fully activated.

As the feature rolls out, adherence to user requests for unsubscribing is expected from businesses, although essential messages like one-time passwords will still be permitted. This new feature is gradually becoming available in the Google Messages app, so if you are an Android user, keep an eye out for it in your app. If you have encountered it, feel free to share your experience!
