Google Maps is enhancing its user interface with a gradual shift towards a sheet-based design. This evolution began last year with the introduction of the Explore tab as a sheet, allowing users to view the primary map while accessing additional content. The redesign has now extended to the You and Contribute screens, further integrating this new approach.
Initially, the changes in the Maps interface may appear subtle, but they contribute significantly to user experience. Google’s aim is to keep important app features accessible without covering the map entirely. Since the launch of the Explore tab in summer 2022, many users have noted that the experience feels more focused on the map itself.
The recent updates indicate that Google is committed to refining this design across more areas of the app. Sources from 9to5Google have confirmed that this update is visible on devices using Google Maps version 25.16.06. With the inclusion of the You and Contribute buttons functioning as sheets, users can now drag them up to occupy either a larger space or just the bottom half of the screen.
This functionality maintains the emphasized map view, which has been a pivotal change in making the app more navigable and user-friendly. Despite the simplicity of this transition, it has taken some time for Google to unify the UI across the app. Now that this redesign is fully implemented, many users are pleased with the updated look.
