Google Home to Introduce Scheduling Feature for Older Nest Thermostats

Google has announced that scheduling features for older Nest thermostats are soon moving to the Google Home app, providing relief for many users. This update will apply to the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (Gen 3) and the Nest Thermostat E, allowing those with these devices to abandon the Nest app for the essential scheduling function they require. Since acquiring the smart home company Nest over a decade ago, Google has faced challenges in fully integrating the Nest ecosystem.

Many devices still rely on the original Nest app for key capabilities, specifically the older thermostats that need it for scheduling. Recently, Google made significant changes to this ecosystem, which may have surprised early Nest adopters but also brought welcome news: scheduling functions will be available in the Google Home app starting later this year. This update addresses one of the main frustrations for users within the Nest ecosystem.

Although Google had mentioned working on this integration previously, today marked the first definitive timeline for its release. The newer Nest Thermostat (launched in 2020) and the upcoming fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat (set for 2024) already support scheduling within the Google Home app. However, the Gen 3 Nest Learning Thermostat, which debuted in 2015, along with the popular Nest Thermostat E, were still left relying on the Nest app.

When the update is officially rolled out, many users will no longer need the Nest app at all, as scheduling functions will be fully transitioned to the Google Home app. Although Google has not provided a specific date for the release, more information is likely to emerge soon, possibly through a public beta. Users eager to access the new features early may want to consider joining the Google Home early access program.
