Google Develops Passkey Import/Export Tools for Android Users

Google is enhancing security by facilitating the transfer of passkeys to new devices, as indicated by recent APK teardowns. Passkeys provide a secure and convenient alternative to traditional passwords. This innovation is particularly important as the FIDO Alliance has introduced a new framework for the secure import and export of passkeys across different platforms. Google’s Password Manager is now showing signs of integrating this system.

Passkeys enhance both security and user experience by utilizing biometrics for authentication. While their adoption promises ease of use compared to conventional passwords, the setup process has often been a hurdle. However, new tools for exporting and importing passkeys are in the works, and Google appears to be making strides in this direction. Recent code discoveries in Google Play Services 25.13.31 beta reveal features related to passkey transfer and export tools in the Google Password Manager.

This includes updated strings that suggest users will be able to export and import passkeys similarly to how they currently manage passwords. The anticipated import functionality would allow users to transition passkeys from other password managers seamlessly. To mitigate potential security issues during the transfer process, Google is taking precautions to ensure that only compliant password managers can facilitate the export. While there’s no specific timeline for the rollout of these features, the progress observed indicates that Google is seriously working towards a more integrated and secure password management experience.

As developments continue, users are encouraged to stay informed about these significant updates to Google’s security features. For tips or insights, communication with the Android Authority team is welcome.
