Google Develops Gemini for Kids: A Homework Assistant and More (APK Teardown)

Google is developing a new version of its Gemini AI specifically for children, as revealed in a recent teardown of the Google app. This child-friendly version aims to assist kids with tasks such as homework help and story creation. It is anticipated that Gemini for kids will incorporate stricter content safeguards and censorship compared to its general version. Gemini has been continuously evolving, now featuring tools like Deep Research and various camera and video functionalities.

The latest findings suggest that the platform is making strides in creating a safer, more suitable environment for younger users. During the APK teardown of the Google app (version 16.12.39), several strings referencing “kid users” were discovered. These included prompts such as “Switch to Gemini from Google Assistant” and descriptions of features available to children, which emphasize creating stories, answering questions, and providing homework assistance. While the general Gemini already offers these capabilities, it is clear that the children’s version will adhere to more stringent content guidelines.

The Google’s safety page indicates that there are enhanced protections for teenagers, but it’s likely that Gemini for kids could go a step further with additional safeguards. The exact implementation of Gemini for kids remains unclear. It is presumed that this mode will automatically activate once a Google account is recognized as belonging to a child. Compliance with international laws regarding children’s data processing will be essential, and one of the strings indicates that data collected will be managed according to Google’s privacy policy, which includes specific provisions for children’s data.
