ChatGPT has recently launched a new image generation tool powered by GPT-4o, which has quickly gained popularity across social media platforms. Users have been sharing images of their portraits transformed into the distinctively enchanting style of Studio Ghibli. Initially, this feature was exclusive to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, but it is now accessible to all users, including those on the free tier. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced this availability on social media, indicating that the demand for the tool has been so high that it was causing significant strain on the company’s GPUs.
As part of the new offerings, free users can generate up to three images per day, although they will encounter certain time limits on usage. In testing the tool with a free ChatGPT account, it was observed that users could initially create just one image. After generating the first Studio Ghibli-style artwork, we received a notification stating, “You need GPT-4o to continue this chat because there’s an attachment. Your limit resets after 2:20 PM.”
This means that users will need to wait for their daily limit to refresh before producing more images or consider upgrading to ChatGPT Plus for enhanced capabilities. If users choose to remain on the free tier, their responses will revert to the mini model of GPT-4o, which does not support attachments. Thus, the new image generation tool offers exciting creative opportunities, but limitations remain for those opting not to upgrade.
