Plex has officially launched its revamped mobile app, concluding a beta phase that began last year. This significant update introduces a fresh interface, enhanced performance, and a redesigned layout that better integrates different aspects of Plex’s extensive ecosystem. Users who participated in the beta testing will find the new design familiar, as it has now become widely available on both Android and iOS platforms.
The redesign features a new navigation system that prioritizes content discoverability and includes a dedicated “Libraries” tab for users to manage their personal media collections efficiently. In a recent blog post, Plex outlined the enhancements made to the app, such as improved visuals that include updated title artwork for movies and shows. These tweaks aim to simplify the browsing, watching, and sharing of content.
Additionally, the app has transitioned to a modernized codebase that will enable Plex to roll out new features across all its platforms simultaneously. Since the beta launch, Plex has implemented numerous improvements, resulting in faster load times and better scrolling performance. Users can now enjoy playback options like picture-in-picture, subtitle pre-selection, and time skip buttons.
Other features, such as the ability to download an entire season at once, are still in development. The app also offers improved context menus and allows users to mark episodes as watched directly from the season view. It’s important to note that this update only impacts the main mobile app.
Music and photo library features are shifting to separate companion apps, Plexamp and Plex Photos, which are still under development. For those who have not yet received the updated app experience, it is expected to roll out in the coming week. Plex is continuously refining this experience, with plans to extend similar updates to TV platforms in the near future, although the value of these changes in light of an upcoming price hike remains a topic of discussion.
