The Pixel Screenshots app is set to receive a new widget, which has been revealed through an APK teardown. This unreleased feature allows users to display their latest screenshot directly on the home screen, alongside some handy tools for quick access.
Currently available with the Google Pixel 9 series, the Pixel Screenshots app organizes all your screenshots in one location. It leverages AI to analyze the content, enabling users to search for screenshots based on specific keywords.
For instance, users can search for terms like “potted plant” to retrieve a relevant screenshot taken months ago. Despite these powerful capabilities, the app has been lacking a widget, but this is about to change.
The Pixel Screenshots widget’s primary purpose is to showcase the most recent screenshot while enabling quick actions such as sharing, editing, or setting a reminder related to that screenshot. However, as it stands, the widget is not resizable in its current form.
While not a significant overhaul of the Pixel Screenshots experience, adding a widget elevates its visibility on users’ devices. Many may forget about the app, relying instead on Google Photos out of habit.
With a visible widget, it becomes more accessible and convenient for regular use. There is also potential for additional features to be introduced when the widget officially launches.
As for the release timeline, it is uncertain when the widget will become available, but Google I/O in May or the June Pixel Drop are likely candidates for an announcement. Users can expect to see this new feature on supported Pixel devices in the coming months.
