Are Snapdragon 8 Elite phones overpriced? A budget-friendly flagship chip may debut this week.

Qualcomm has scheduled a launch event in China, anticipated to unveil new flagship-tier smartphone processors. The event is set for April 2 and is expected to introduce the Snapdragon 8s Elite or Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip. While the Snapdragon 8 Elite is currently regarded as the top smartphone processor of the year, there is speculation surrounding a more affordable high-end chip that will cater to budget-conscious consumers.

The Snapdragon 8s Elite or Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would likely sit just below the Snapdragon 8 Elite in terms of performance, following a similar trend as the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 did in relation to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Recently, a leaker known as Digital Chat Station shared potential specifications for the upcoming Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. According to these claims, the chip would be built on a 4nm TSMC process and feature a diverse CPU configuration that includes a Cortex-X4 core and several Cortex-A720 cores operating at varying clock speeds.

This suggests a robust CPU performance, though it may not match the capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which utilizes custom Oryon technology. Moreover, the new chip is expected to incorporate an Adreno 825 GPU derived from the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s Adreno 830 graphics. There are also indications that the image signal processor, modem, and other key modules may be adapted from the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Reports indicate that the first phone featuring this chip is likely to come from Redmi, boasting an impressive “7,500mAh+” battery along with a flat display. It is noteworthy that Qualcomm’s announcement hints at multiple new processors, leaving room for additional surprises at the impending event. This could also signal an upcoming follow-up to the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 3 chip.
